Graduate Student’s Mission to Change Student Culture

November 05, 2010

Duncan Wlodarczak is on a mission. The urban studies master’s student wants to change grad student culture to reflect the sense of urgency that’s critical to building a sustainable future.

A student member of SFU’s Sustainability Advisory Committee since 2009, Wlodarczak has not only helped create the student-run non-profit Sustainable SFU, but also launched a new sustainability committee and begun writing drafts for sustainable and ethical purchasing policies for the Graduate Student Society.

This year he’s organizing an Oct. 10 event for’s 10/10/10 Global Work Party, an international effort to encourage people to put up solar panels, insulate homes, erect windmills, plant trees, paint bike paths and launch or harvest local gardens.

Wlodarczak’s master’s research examines how to make cities more resilient to coming crises such as oil shortages, climate change and environmental degradation.

"The time for inaction," he says, "has long since passed."
