Job Posting: RA in the Centre for English Language Learning, Teaching and Research (CELLTR)

The Centre of English Language Learning, Teaching, and Research advocates for and supports EAL students in SFU's multilingual and multicultural environment at the curricular and co-curricular levels across the university. The Centre also partners with faculties and support units to coordinate existing and future EAL supports, and conceptualizes and delivers instructional and professional development to faculty, staff, instructors, and TAs in the area of best practices in academic language and literacy development, and sociocultural engagement.

CELLTR is looking for a Research Assistant to work with Dr. Joel Heng Hartse (Lecturer, Faculty of Education and the CELLTR Liaison to Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences) to assist with a research project involving a new course, ECON 220W – Economics in the News. The Research assistant will also work with the Economics instructor, Greg Harder, on duties including, but not limited to the following:

  • Assisting with a literature review in the areas of
    • assessment of writing improvement
    • research on collaborative partnerships between language instructors and content instructors
    • first and second language writing pedagogy in Economics
  • Assisting in the development of a mixed methods research project that encompasses:
    • assessment of students’ knowledge and practice of writing
    • student and instructor experiences of teaching and learning in the course
  • Conducting interviews, surveys, etc. as needed
  • Assisting with data analysis as needed

Qualifications:

  • Current PhD student at SFU
  • Experience and/or interest in working with students for whom English is an additional language
  • Familiarity with theory and research in one or more of the following disciplines: applied linguistics, writing studies, rhetoric/composition, and/or higher education pedagogy
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English (excellent written and oral communication in additional languages is also desirable, but not required)
  • Experience involving TAing/teaching writing desired
  • Some research experience desired
  • Some knowledge of economics is desired

Duration: February 9, 2017 to May 4, 2017

Rate: $25.00 per hour for 5 hours per week.
