SFU's Strengths

Member of the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada
In Canada, provinces and territories are responsible for all levels of education including universities. There is no federal ministry of education or formal accreditation system. Membership in AUCC, along with the university's provincial government charter, is considered the equivalent to accreditation for public post-secondary institutions in Canada.

Education Quality Assurance (EQA) designated
The Province of British Columbia is unique in Canada in that there is a provincial brand of quality for post-secondary education known as "Education Quality Assurance" (EQA).

NWCCU Accreditation
With no comparable national quality-assurance organization in Canada, SFU has applied for formal accreditation in the United States from the Washington-based Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU).

Effective January 11, 2012 the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities approved SFU as a Candidate for Accreditation at the doctoral degree level. "Candidate for Accreditation" is a status of affiliation with the NWCCU which indicates that the institution has achieved initial recognition and is progressing toward accreditation.
