Ben-Gurion University (BGU)/Simon Fraser University (SFU) Cotutelle

Funding Opportunities

The purpose of this scholarship is to encourage SFU faculty to establish cotutelles (individualized joint degrees) with colleagues at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev (BGU).  This scholarship will form a portion of the commitment for BGU students coming to Simon Fraser University. Note that SFU students going to Ben-Gurion University should contact BGU in regards to scholarship support and can expect comparable amounts while studying at BGU.

The eligibility criteria for these awards are:

  • demonstrated academic excellence at the undergraduate and at the graduate level;
  • enrolled in a BGU/SFU cotutelle program, the cotutelle must be approved by both institutions;
  • students must spend minimally 1 year (normally 2 years) at the partner institution under the supervision of their thesis supervisor at that institution.

These awards may be held in conjunction with other awards made by Simon Fraser University or other agencies, where permitted by those agencies.

These awards will be made by the Dean of Graduate Studies on the nomination of the thesis supervisor on behalf of the Senate Graduate Awards Adjudication Committee.

Scholarship

BGU students will receive minimally $18,000 per year from SFU sources while studying at SFU (SFU students can expect comparable amounts while studying at BGU). This scholarship will form a portion of the commitment for BGU students.

A limited number of BGU/SFU Cotutelle Scholarships valued at up to $6250 per year for a maximum of two years are available for BGU students, provided the SFU supervisor/department will provide the balance so that the total financial support equals at least $18,000.

The student must be nominated for this award by their SFU thesis supervisor and approved by their Graduate Program Chair. The nomination is made on the Application for a Private Graduate Scholarship form and must be accompanied by:

  • a nomination letter from the SFU senior thesis supervisor
  • copies of all post-secondary transcripts
  • a financial commitment from the thesis supervisor/department , that when combined with this scholarship, is minimally $18,000 per year
  • a copy of the BGU/SFU cotutelle agreement

Travel Award

A limited number of SFU students going to BGU are eligible to receive up to $2000 to assist with their travel costs to BGU.

The student must be nominated for this award by their SFU thesis supervisor and approved by their Graduate Program Chair. The nomination is made on the Application for a Private Graduate Scholarship form and must be accompanied by:

  • a nomination letter from the SFU senior thesis supervisor
  • copies of all post-secondary transcripts
  • a copy of the SFU/BGU cotutelle agreement
