A Dialogue on Rural-Urban Interdependence in BC [PDF] Seeking to understand the balance between economic survival and sustainability, this session explored the current state of rural BC: demographics, migration patterns, economic forecasts, values and lived experiences. Tools of Change: Proven Methods for Promoting Environmental Citizenship This report is a combination of tools for community change and case studies in effecting proven environmental change. Sponsored by the Education Committee of the National Round Table on the Environment and the Economy, case studies include successful examples from around the world including the BC21 Power Smart project and the Kamloops WaterSmart program. Authors McKenzie-Mohr and Kassirer are leaders in the area of strategies to effect community change. Living Beyond Our Means: Natural Assets and Human Well-being. Imagine BC Year One Consensus Statement [PDF] On October 24–27, 2004, Imagine BC delegates gathered to explore what kind of future they envision for the province in the next 30 years. Encouraged to think long term, beyond today's headlines and partisan interests, they talked about whether there is such a thing as British Columbian culture, how they value economic prosperity, environmental sustainability and healthy communities in the long term, and identified some necessary choices that should be made today in order to realize a future. Their Consensus Statement is intended to invite further dialogue and exploration of the future of BC and to begin to set a course for a series of dialogues involving as many British Columbians as possible over the years to come. Salmon Forever: An Assessment of the Provincial Role in Sustaining Wild Salmon On October 26, 2004 Auditor General Wayne Strelioff released his office's report on the provincial role in the management of wild salmon. Strelioff says that while the government has taken important steps to deal with the possible risks posed to wild salmon by aquaculture operations, further studies are also needed to better understand the interactions between wild salmon stocks and aquaculture operations. [88MB | PDF format] Early Childhood Education and Care Policy — Canada Country Note [PDF] The Early Childhood Education and Care Policy: Canada Country Note was prepared by an international review team of early childhood education experts appointed by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) as part of the second round of the OECD's Thematic Review of Early Childhood Education and Care Policy. The Government of Canada along with the provinces of British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Prince Edward Island participated in the review. The report presents observations and recommendations on a range of programs and services including kindergarten, pre-kindergarten, child care and family services. The report's findings contribute to the growing body of knowledge in Canada concerning best practices for early childhood education and care programs and services that support children's healthy development and help working parents and those returning to school.
