Our Complex World: Representation, Analysis and Modeling

Welcome to the website of the joint workshops titled "Our Complex World: Representation, Analysis and Modeling" by the International Cartographic Association (ICA) and the International Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ISPRS) to be held from the 10-12th August 2011 on the campus of Simon Fraser University, Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada.

We are now pleased to invite researchers, professionals, managers and decision-makers, students, vendors and users to submit papers on the latest scientific issues and trends related to the themes of the Workshops described below. Participants will have opportunities to share knowledge, exchange scientific ideas and results, network and develop long term research collaborations.

Feel free to explore the website links or download a PDF version of the CALL FOR PAPERS.

4th ICA Workshop on Geospatial Analysis and Modeling

Background and Scope

Following the success of three previous workshops, we are pleased to announce that the Fourth International Cartographic Association (ICA) Workshop on Geospatial Analysis and Modeling will be held from August 10-12, 2011 at Simon Fraser University (SFU), Burnaby, Canada. Given the traditions of the workshop series, we aim at bringing together leading researchers from relevant disciplines to address issues related to the complexity of dynamic geographical and environmental systems from a geospatial analysis and modeling perspective. The overall focus will be to examine the conceptual, technical and application challenges of complexity science as a paradigm to effectively analyze the linkages between social, economic and natural systems evolving in time and across geographic space. The workshop is organized by the ICA Commission on Geospatial Analysis and Modeling, and sponsored by Simon Fraser University, the MoCSSy Program and IRMACS Center at SFU. Researchers will have the opportunity to share knowledge, exchange scientific ideas and results, and develop long term research collaborations. The 3rd ICA workshop on geospatial analysis and modeling was held in 2009 in Gavle, Sweden.

Workshop Topics

The topics will focus on but not limited to the following areas:

  • Cellular automata and agent-based modeling
  • Visual analytical tools for environmental and urban systems
  • Analysis of human movement data
  • Spatio-temporal data mining
  • Small-world modeling and spatial interactions
  • Hierarchies, scaling and structures of geographic patterns
  • Modeling vehicle dynamics and crowd behavior
  • Patterns of human spatial behavior and migration
  • Urban high-resolution morphology
  • Evolutionary computing

2nd ISPRS Workshop on Pervasive Web Mapping, Geoprocessing and Services

Background and Scope

The workshop will take place at Simon Fraser University (SFU), Burnaby, Canada from August 10-12, 2011. It is the second of a series of ISPRS WG IV/5 workshops that provide a dedicated scientific forum for researchers, professionals, government decision-makers and students to exchange and discuss current and state of the art advances in web-based mapping, geospatial information services and applications. The workshop emphasizes a diverse topic range related to the new web-based development of geospatial theories, technologies and solutions. The workshop is organized by ISPRS WG IV/5 in collaboration with ISPRS WG IV/1 and IV/4, sponsored by Simon Fraser University, the MoCSSy Program and IRMACS Center at SFU. Researchers will have the opportunity to share knowledge, exchange scientific ideas and results, and develop long term research collaborations. The 1st ISPRS workshop on persvasive web mapping, geoprocessing and services was held in 2010 in Como, Italy.

Workshop Topics

The topics will focus on but not limited to the following areas:

  • Web-based analysis analysis and mobile applications
  • Automatic web geoprocessing and workflows
  • Geospatial web architecture and system design
  • Geocollaboration and map mashups
  • Geospatial web semantics and ontology
  • Cartographic theories & web mapping interfaces
  • Intelligent web mapping/GIS services
  • Web-based virtual geospatial environments
  • Open source solutions and specifications
  • Quality assessment of web-based data sources
  • 2D/3D visual effects and internet geovisualization
  • Web-based SDSS and PPGIS
  • Security and copyright for the geospatial web
  • Web-based mapping and GIS for education
