Field Trip leader: Mike Roberts (SFU)
The purpose of this field trip is to examine urban development taking place in areas (North and West Vancouver) exposed to natural hazards typical of a glaciated mountainous landscape. We will visit field sites where development has been permitted in locations exposed to flooding, debris flows, slope failure and high tide inundation; examples of engineering mitigation will be reviewed. These hazardous environments present a major challenge to city planners and we will discuss appropriate urban management solutions at the various field sites.
