Chair's Message

Welcome to the Department of Earth Sciences!

Our department is a young one by Canadian standards, with its origins in 1995. Since then, we have grown rapidly and maintained a dynamic and vibrant spirit. We currently have approximately 120 undergraduate and graduate students in the department, taught by 16 faculty and 16 adjunct faculty members. Undergraduate students can choose from two main streams: Geology and Environmental Geoscience. Both streams lead to exciting and well-paying careers. Our undergraduate program has a strong field component, and offers four field schools plus several field trips linked to a variety of required and optional courses. Graduating students have the academic qualifications to register as professional geoscientists in British Columbia. In the graduate studies program, MSc and PhD candidates work closely with faculty. Through this collaborative approach, our department and its members have earned an international reputation for excellence in scientific research.

Faculty are dedicated to mentoring undergraduate and graduate students alike, making our department an excellent home for learners at all levels. Please browse our website for more information on Earth Sciences at Simon Fraser University – I'm convinced that you will be impressed with the opportunities that our department can offer. Prospective graduate students are encouraged to contact individual faculty to enquire about potential graduate theses.

James MacEachern,
Professor and Chair
