The Department of Earth Sciences is a relatively new academic unit in the Faculty of Science. It was established as a Program in 1995 and was granted full departmental status in September, 1999.

The initial conception of the Department of Earth Sciences is that it would function around a traditional geology core, have a teaching and research focus on environmental geology, and provide a program of Earth Sciences courses that would allow SFU students to register as professional geoscientists (P.Geo) with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of British Columbia (APEGBC). The Department has developed according to this plan and has attained considerable strength not only in environmental geoscience, but also in traditional geology.
