Applying for entry into the Economics program
Note: program approvals will only be considered from week 3 through week 8 of each semester.
Students who have an interest in economics are advised to take Grade 12 Math. A high school economics course is useful, but is not essential for university level courses in economics.
Students who complete course work in Economics at a college are advised to consult the B.C. College Transfer guide to see how their course work will transfer over to Economics at Simon Fraser University. Students must complete ECON 201 at SFU with at least a C- grade and meet the minimum SFU CGPA requirement of 2.60 and have a SFU ECON/BUEC GPA of 2.00.
Students may apply for entry into the economics program once ECON 201 is completed with at least a C- grade, providing they meet the minimum CGPA requirement of 2.60, SFU ECON/BUEC GPA of 2.00 or above, and have completed 30 units.
The student will abide by all the rules and regulations of their "Graduating Calendar". This is the calendar in effect at the time of their program approval. It is the student's responsibility to obtain a copy of this calendar and become familiar with the rules and regulations applying to their course of study.
Students should see the Undergraduate Advisors to declare Economics programs between Week 3 and 8 of the semester. Drop in Advising is available in WMC 3695 generally from 10:00am to 2:00pm Monday through Friday.
The advisor will help the student identify any weaknesses or deficiencies in their course of study and suggest a plan of action which may help remedy these difficulties.
To be approved by the Department of Economics as an honors or joint honors student, you must have a minimum CGPA of 3.0 and have completed the ECON required lower division courses with a grade of C- or better.
If a student is unsuccessful in their application, they may appeal the decision to the Undergraduate Chair or reapply the following semester.
