Declaring your program
Are you looking to major or minor in economics? Below, find out how you can apply to an economics program.
Note: Program applications will only be considered from September 17 to November 2, 2018.
How to declare your program
Students may apply for entry into the economics program once the following requirements are met:
- You have completed ECON 201 with at least a C- grade
- You have met the minimum cumulative grade point average (CGPA) requirement of 2.6 *
- You have met the SFU ECON/BUEC GPA of 2.0 or above
- You have completed 30 units
The student will abide by all the rules and regulations of their "Graduating Calendar." This is the calendar in effect at the time of their program approval. It is the student's responsibility to obtain a copy of this calendar, and become familiar with the rules and regulations therein applying to their course of study.
Once the above requirements are met, please contact an undergraduate advisor to declare Economics programs between September 17 and November 2, 2018. Drop-in Advising is available in WMC 3695 generally from 9:30 am to 3:00 pm, Monday through Friday.
The advisor will help you with identifying any potential weaknesses or deficiencies in your course of study, and suggest a plan of action which may help remedy these difficulties.
* Please note that effective September 17, 2018, the required cumulative grade point average (CGPA) for declaring an economics minor will change from 2.6 to 2.4.
To be approved by the Department of Economics as an honours or joint honours student, you must have a minimum cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 3.0, and have completed the ECON required lower division courses with a grade of C- or higher.
If a student is unsuccessful in their application, they may appeal the decision to the Undergraduate Chair, or re-apply the following semester.
