Declaring your program

Are you looking to major or minor in economics? Below, find out how you can apply to an economics program.

Note: Program applications will only be considered from September 17 to November 2, 2018.

How to declare your program

Major

Students may apply for entry into the economics major program once the following requirements are met:

  • You have completed ECON 201 with at least a C- grade
  • You have met the minimum cumulative grade point average (CGPA) requirement of 2.6
  • You have met the SFU ECON/BUEC GPA of 2.0 or above
  • You have completed 30 units

Extended minor

Students may apply for entry into the economics extended minor program once the following requirements are met:

  • You have completed ECON 201 with at least a C- grade
  • You have met the minimum cumulative grade point average (CGPA) requirement of 2.4
  • You have met the SFU ECON/BUEC GPA of 2.0 or above
  • You have completed 30 units

Minor

Students may apply for entry into the economics minor program once the following requirements are met:

  • You have completed ECON 103 and 105 with at least a C- grade
  • You have met the minimum cumulative grade point average (CGPA) requirement of 2.4
  • You have met the SFU ECON GPA of 2.0 or above
  • You have completed 30 units

Once the above requirements are met, please contact an undergraduate advisor to declare economics programs between September 17 and November 2, 2018. Drop-in Advising is available in WMC 3695 generally from 9:30 am to 3:00 pmMonday through Friday.

The advisor will help you with identifying any potential weaknesses or deficiencies in your course of study, and suggest a plan of action which may help remedy these difficulties.

Honours program

To be approved by the Department of Economics as an honours or joint honours student, you must have a minimum cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 3.0, and have completed the ECON required lower division courses with a grade of C- or higher.

If a student is unsuccessful in their application, they may appeal the decision to the Undergraduate Chair, or re-apply the following semester.
