Reading Response #1 (4 points)

Online Discussion in Week 3

Readings

Tiene & Ingram (2001):

  • Pages 25 - 35
  • Chapters 2, 3 & 4

Article:

Consider the following question to prepare yourself for the online reading response discussion. (The discussion question will be posted by the first day of conferencing.)

It becomes obvious at the very start of these two sets of readings that their authors have quite different orientations to questions about why and how computing technology should be used in K-12 schools. A surface reading would suggest that Tiene & Ingram are "pro technology" and Healy is "anti technology"; but like most everything in the field of Education, the matter is not black and white.

1. Healy Interview. Healy portrays a rather critical perspective of computing technologies in K-12 schools. Consider a few arguments she has presented and an alternative explanation or counterpoint to each of the selected arguments.

A note: Actually in Chapter 2 of Healy's book (the optional text), she mentions potential advantages that computing and communications technologies might have for learning in K-12 schools. She points out that many of the possible advantages of computing for student learning are not as easily realized as many seem to think. She also dismisses some (but not all) of computing's potential along the way.

2. Tiene & Ingram, pp. 25-35; Chapters 3 and 4. Explain in your own words what Tiene & Ingram mean by "constructivism" and discuss at least two reasons why computers might help to accomplish constructivist teaching.

3. Consider the common ground you can find between the ideas presented in the two sets of readings. Between the Healy Interview and Tiene & Ingram, which do you find most persuasive so far and why?

Hint: Tiene & Ingram, Chapter 2. We may not discuss this online, but read it carefully because it will help you with Assignment #3.
