Assignment #1: Saving & Finding Files on the Mac (2 points)

DUE in Week 2

A. Saving Files

1. On the desktop of your Macintosh, create a folder called "Assignment1" (no space between the word "assignment" and the number "1". )

2. Launch Microsoft Word. Create a document that has your full name at the top, then your answer to the following question:

Given what you know about technology and education, and what you've read so far, which one of the following topics do you think you would like to start exploring for your Position Paper?

Media awareness or media literacy
Software design and use for Elementary students
Software design and use for Secondary students
Information Technology policy in schools
Information Technology in the school curriculum
Access and equity with regard to computing resources in schools
(If you have a more specific idea of your interest or other interests, please describe that, too!)

3. Save this file in the "Assignment1" folder with the following name: "<Your Name> PaperTopic"

4. Save a copy of this file in your Blackcomb account.

5. Send a copy of this file to yourself and your instructor in e-mail, using the SFU WebMail interface

When you're done, show your instructor that you have completed the assignment.

B. Finding Files

  1. Open a new message using WebMail. Address it to your instructor.

  2. Using the Macintosh file finding utility, locate the txt file, "test". Write the full path to this file in your message. Then copy the first page of this file into the message.

  3. Using the Finder, hunt around in the folders in the hard drive and find MSN Messanger. Add the name of this software and its path to it to the email message, and send it.
