Exploring Maker Pedagogy in Education (Surrey) - Summer 2020

OVERVIEW

This Graduate Diploma in Advanced Professional Studies in Education (GDE) has been developed in partnership with School District #36, Surrey for K-12 teachers interested in making, creating, innovating, building, design thinking, contributing to the school community, and in developing pedagogical practice while engaging in sustained reflective inquiry.

PROGRAM THEMES

  • Engaging in teacher inquiry and reflective practice
  • Engaging in ADST’s curricular competencies focusing on the human centred design thinking process
  • Building a classroom culture of creativity, exploration and critical thinking
  • Designing learning experiences and environments to reflect the growing importance of creativity and design
  • Engaging with Indigenous and holistic approaches to teaching and learning (First Peoples Principles of Learning)
  • Discovering and implementing new and emerging technologies, tools,
    and materials
  • Exploring the role of maker within the curriculum and core competencies
  • Exploring design thinking, engineering, materiality, and interdisciplinarity through problem-based learning
  • Fostering creative and critical thinking through collaborative teams
  • Creating caring and socially responsible community learning environments
  • Collaborating, mentorship, and leadership in teaching and learning innovation

This two-year, 30-unit program of study is for teachers whose primary focus is school-based educational practice. It provides the opportunity to engage in focused, sustained reflective inquiry. Completion of the diploma allows teachers to move from TQS category 4 to TQS 5 or from category 5 to 5+.
