Curriculum & Instruction: Numeracy MEd (Grande Prairie, AB) - Fall 2018

OVERVIEW

This two-year program is designed for elementary and middle school teachers who wish to:

  • examine multiple perspectives on teaching and learning of mathematics,
  • explore interconnection between mathematic and numeracy, and
  • enhance their own personal problem solving skills.

This MEd program is designed around the definition of numeracy as 'mathematics in action.' As such, the program is designed on the principle that mathematics is best learned and taught through an emphasis on 'doing' mathematics. The program seeks to:

  1. Change the student's conceptions of what mathematics is both through personal experience and the examination of contemporary mathematics education literature.
  2. Help students to construct an understanding of numeracy through the examination of educational literature and curriculum documents, as well as a multi-dimensional survey of the utility of mathematics.
  3. Facilitate a transformation of educational practice to one that will be commensurate with the newly evolving understandings of mathematics and numeracy.
