Program/Degree: Educational Technology & Learning Design, MA, MEd

I am a PhD candidate in Organizational Studies at Schulich School of Business, York University, Toronto. My main area of research interest is understanding team dynamics in crisis situations. I have been studying teams in a variety of contexts such as top management teams, mine rescue teams, and theatre stage management teams. My dream job is to be a member of a research institution and become a lead researcher in the study of teams and crisis management.

Please tell us how you first discovered your program.
I was looking for a graduate program in Education that would suit my learning interests and help build on my educational and work background.

Please tell us why you chose the Faculty of Education at SFU for your studies.
There were two main reasons. First, the course offerings covered a variety of topics and were structured to encourage students to approach every educational topic from different theoretical and practical perspectives. This created a powerful learning environment for us where we got to practice how to engage in critical thinking when designing and improving a learning experience. Second, the faculty members had strong research profiles, which was something I was specifically looking for when I was applying.

Who is a faculty member you have enjoyed working with and why?
Dr. Kevin O'Neill and Dr. Alyssa Wise. Both are top-notch researchers who are also willing to engage graduate students in their projects and provide them with an opportunity to learn how to conduct high-quality research.

What do you miss most about your graduate studies in the Faculty of Education?
Learning something new (technology-wise, research-wise) almost every day, being part of in-depth discussions and intellectual debates about different educational topics in a safe environment, extremely nice and knowledgeable faculty members.

What would you say to prospective students who are considering graduate school in the Faculty of Education?
If you are looking for an opportunity to build a strong research profile and, at the same time, develop some useful skills in designing an effective learning environment, this is the program for you!
