Annual Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies Awards Ceremony

October 28, 2019

The Dean attended the GPS Award Ceremony where two Education faculty members received awards. Congratulations to Vicki Kelly (Leadership) and Sean Blenkinsop (Supervision) for this outstanding recognition of their work with graduate students.  

Annual Association of Canadian Deans of Education (ACDE) Fall Meeting

October 23–25, 2019

Dr. O’Neill travelled to Quebec City to attend the ACDE 2019 Fall Meeting. Discussions included Strategic Planning for ACDE and developing a communications strategy, developing an Accord on Sustainability and Education, and revising with Indigenous communities the Accord on Indigenous Education. A breakfast meeting also took place with all female Deans of Education from across Canada.

Annual SFU Diwali Gala

October 17, 2019

The Dean hosted a Faculty of Education table at the 12th annual SFU Diwali Gala held at the Crown Palace Banquet Hall in Surrey. Diwali, the festival of lights, is celebrated in India and around the world. We were happy to have Neder Dhillon, Acting Assistant Superintendent, from the Surrey School District, join our table. Celebrating the festival, allows SFU to highlight the University’s initiatives in India and our engagement with BC’s Indo-Canadian diaspora.

Deans' Fall Retreat

October 16, 2019

Dr. O’Neill attended the Deans’ Fall Retreat held at the Hart House Lakeside Cottage in Burnaby. Among the topics discussed was the amount of research support at the Faculty level and how do we gauge excellence/impact.

Fall Convocation

October 11, 2019

Dean attended Fall Convocation and congratulated our graduates on their degree awards. Due to the advocacy of members of the Indigenous Education Reconciliation Council (led by Cher Hill and Vicki Kelly) along with the ongoing work of the Office of Aboriginal Peoples, the fall convocation included Drumming as part of the convocation ceremony as a pilot and Ceremonies and Events has communicated they wish to continue this good work at future events.

Chancellor's Dinner

October 10, 2019

The Dean attended the Chancellor’s Dinner in honour of the Fall honorary degree recipients, student speakers and student award recipients for Fall Convocation.

Executive Committee Social in Surrey

October 09, 2019

Susan O’Neill and other members of the Executive Committee joined in at the first Executive-hosted informal social for faculty and staff to be held at each of the three campuses for the Fall semester. The first one being held on the Surrey campus.

Sisters of Saint Ann

October 09, 2019

Dr. O’Neill, along with Natalie Brenton, Senior Associate Director of Advancement in Education, met with Sister Judi Morin, Sister Joyce Harris, board members and administrators from the Sisters of Saint Ann. The Sisters of Saint Ann have served in the Pacific Northwest since 1858 and have made a generous $200K donation to the Faculty of Education for two initiatives supporting Indigenous cultural awareness and reconciliation.

President's Alumni and Friends Reception in Victoria

Dr. O’Neill attended the SFU alumni and friends reception in Victoria hosted by SFU President Andrew Petter.

The Dean met with various members of government at the parliament buildings in Victoria, to discuss Faculty of Education updates, French Language training, and opportunities to support various ministry mandates and priorities.

SFU’s Government Relations Delegation in Victoria

October 08, 2019

The Dean joined President Andrew Petter, VP Research and International Joy Johnson, VP External Relations Joanne Curry and others in Victoria for meetings with the Government and Opposition caucuses.

Teachers from Tokyo Complete International Professional Development

October 04, 2019

Dr. O’Neill congratulated the Tokyo teachers who completed a 10-week International Professional Development Program for Teachers of English. This program was offered by the Office of International Education in collaboration with faculty member Dr. Steve Marshall.
