INTRODUCTION

Hi! I'm Emily, I am currently a 3rd year education student at SFU. I enjoy theatre performance and acting, singing, and scrapbooking. I waste a lot of time online and procrastinating all the papers I should be writing. I am second generation Canadian with an Irish and Scottish background. I want to become a middle school/elementary school teacher, but my dream job is becoming a musical theatre actress on Broadway!

WHY FACULTY OF EDUCATION

I have always wanted to teach, I was inspired by my favourite teachers from school and from my Grandmother. SFU seemed like a good choice because the Surrey campus is not too far from where I live and I had heard that the SFU Education program was reputable and would work well for me.

INSTRUCTOR OF NOTE

I have very much enjoyed working with Allan MacKinnon in EDUC 100, he was such a positive spirit and I learned a lot about teaching and learning from his class. He connected with all of his students on a deeper level, and even now (at least a year later) he still recognizes me and will make the effort to say hello and ask how I am doing.

MY INSPIRATION

The fact that in the end I will be able to teach and impact other people with the knowledge I have acquired.

MY STUDENT ADVICE

If you want to become a teacher, of any grade, believe in yourself and you can do it. Don't be afraid to ask questions and be curious. Have fun with it, you will retain more information and enjoy yourself. Also, don't worry if first year doesn't go as well as you hoped it would, it takes time to adjust to all the new teachers, lecture halls, and tests; it will get easier.

BEST LEARNING EXPERIENCE

So far my best learning experience has been finding out the ways that I learn, study, and take notes best. Most of this learning took place during my first year as I was developing strategies to get through it all. Now I have my own personal study methods and note-taking strategies that help me to better myself and learn effectively.
