Detailed 2011-2014 program description

goals

The EdD Program in Educational Leadership is intended to provide participants with structured and supported opportunities for:

  • The systematic acquisition and interpretation of a wide range of scholarly and professional literature pertinent to the advanced study of educational leadership and professional practice.
  • In-depth investigations of up-to-date research, state of the art practices, and grounded theory to forge knowledge with action.
  • Sharing and interrogating personal practical knowledge.
  • Integrating accumulated professional knowledge and scholarly inquiry.
  • Deep understanding of applicable research methods and advanced academic inquiry.
  • Conceptualizing, designing and implementing a research program for the generation of new knowledge that will satisfy the highest standards of academic and professional review.

Upon completion of the program participants will have conducted an original investigation that is a pertinent contribution to professional knowledge and practice. More specifically, this program studies the theory and practice pertaining to managing diversity in French minority communities.

The Faculty of Education at Simon Fraser University counts on creating dynamic partnerships with Canadian and international universities, school districts, professional associations, community and governmental organizations to ensure that the next generation of leaders meets the specific education needs of Francophones and Francophiles in Canada.

TUITION (suBjeCt TO CHANGE)

The tuition fee for each of the 8 semesters is approximately $4,260. The total tuition fee for the program is approximately $34,000.  There are additional students fees such as the $75 application fee (paid once) and the various student fees per semester (student activity fee, student services, etc.). For details, see http://students.sfu.ca/calendar/for_students/grad_tuition_fees.html

If a student enrolls for additional semesters (after the eighth semester) to complete the work, each additional semester costs only 50% of the regular fee.  It is possible to finish the program in 9 semesters but in general students take from 9 to 12 semesters.

Tax benefits, bursaries, financial aid

Although the courses are part-time, the status of the program allows students to deduct tuition fees thus considerably lowering the program cost.  Visit the Revenue Canada website for details.  Click here for an example of tax savings. Students may be eligible for SFU bursaries. Some students may be able to benefit from professional development financial aid available through their school district or institution.

Teachers residing in British Columbia and enrolled in a doctorate program offered entirely in French are eligible for a teacher bursary from the Minister of Education of British Columbia.  The maximum amount of this bursary is $6,000 for the three years. You can download the bursary application form.
