French Language Appraisal (FLA)
In addition to the academic requirements, all candidates applying to the French Module must demonstrate an appropriate level of French language competency. The French Language Appraisal is mandatory for all candidates including Francophones.
If you have successfully completed the DELF Pro (Diplôme d'études en langue française, option "professionnelle") or DALF (Diplôme approfondi de langue française) or if you have already taken the FLA, please contact Betty Chin (betty_chin@sfu.ca) to find out if you have to take the FLA or not.
Students are placed in practicums in one of the options of the French Module according to their academic preparation and the results on the French Language Appraisal (FLA). The options are:
- Elementary - FSL (French as a Second Language)
- Secondary - FSL
- Elementary - Immersion or Francophone Program
- Secondary - Immersion or Francophone Program
On receipt of your application to the French Module you will be contacted to schedule your appraisal or, you can call 778.782.7646 to arrange it.
To prepare for the appraisal, we have designed a booklet containing information on the content of the appraisal and providing sample questions. You can ask for a copy of this booklet when you register for the appraisal. A copy is also available from the PDP Admissions office or you can download it here.
SFU and UBC administer the same appraisal. It is preferable to register for the appraisal at the university where you wish to take the teacher education program. The results will be transferred between universities at the applicant's request.
The cost of the appraisal is $90 per person (group session).
If you cannot comme to an appraisal on a scheduled Saturday at SFU, it is also possible to organize a private session on the Burnaby campus at another time or a private out-of-town session. There is an additional cost.
For administrative details about the appraisal, you can download the information sheet (PDF).
