Message from the Director

Simon Fraser University offers one of the most innovative engineering science educations in Canada. Our students are trained to analyze, design and develop cutting-edge high-tech solutions that tackle traditional engineering problems in novel real-world ways. But we’re much more than an academic program.

Our challenging and pioneering approach prepares students to become the next generation of technology leaders – combining a deep foundation of technical skills with hands-on experience on campus as well as industry and entrepreneurial experience beyond the classroom.

For me, the cornerstone of everything we do is collaboration. From team-based courses to mandatory co-ops and from working closely with our faculty to productive partnerships with industry, we recognize that even the most brilliant new engineers must learn to work together and communicate effectively.

We also strive for a deeper understanding of the ethical, economic and far-reaching human contexts of our field. This is the foundation for our cutting-edge research, one of the most vital areas of our work. I feel privileged to be collaborating with a world-class faculty that includes two Canada Research Chairs and several more who hold industrial research chairs.

Our students are actively engaged with this research. And they gain even more experience through co-op. I’ve been proud to watch our respected co-op program grow and enrich students and industry partners over the years. It’s invaluable in helping students transition successfully into careers – in fact, the majority of our graduates gain their first job through contacts they made in co-op.

Personally, it’s always been an honour to lead a school that – through excellence in education and research – attracts the finest engineering students from Canada and beyond. We’re one of the reasons SFU has been recognized by Maclean’s magazine as Canada’s No. 1 comprehensive university six times since 2008.

We have much to be proud of at this university as well as within the School of Engineering Science. But with innovation as our watchword, there’s always more to discover. I invite you to explore our website, contact us with any questions about the school – and then consider joining us in developing the future.
