Alton Harestad Book Award in Environmental Science

Professor Alton Harestad served as a faculty member in Biological Sciences at Simon Fraser University for over thirty years. From 1996 until his retirement in 2009, Dr. Harestad was directly involved in the creation, operation and administration of the Environmental Science program now housed in the Faculty of Environment. This program has grown to become one of the most successful of its kind in Canada.

Professor Harestad’s impact upon student learning in terms of his specific specialty of wildlife biology as well as his instruction in the field-based research are legendary. His genuine love of the discipline, combined with his very thoughtful environmental science questions in the field won him great respect and a very faithful following amongst Environmental Science students. He successfully mentored students in highly complex and difficult problems ensuring a remarkably high standard of education and an equally high level of completion.

The Faculty of Environment honours Professor Harestad with this award that recognizes a highly successful graduating student who has consistently exhibited toward fellow students a reputation for mentoring and contributing towards an improved student experience both academically and socially in Environmental Science.

Nominations are accepted twice a year to the Office of the Dean with deadlines of September 15 and May 15, prior to the convocation ceremonies; a simple email to fenv-info@sfu.ca outlining your reasons for nominating a candidate is all that's required. The Dean, in consultation with faculty and staff, will make the award to the most deserving student. The successful student will receive a gift certificate for books valued at $150.
