Global Institute for Agritech Hosts 2024 Internal Workshop
The Global Institute for Agritech (GIA) concluded the year with an engaging workshop that fostered collaboration and innovation among its faculty members and partners from Simon Fraser University.
The event welcomed a diverse group of attendees, including representatives from SFU Sustainability, BC Centre for Agritech Institute, SFU Knowledge Mobilization, SFU International, the Faculty of Applied Sciences, the Faculty of Science, and SFU’s Advancement and Alumni Engagement team.
The workshop encouraged discussions and idea-sharing at the intersection of various agritech sectors. It also highlighted the necessity for more collaborative spaces to foster innovation and discussion on crucial issues facing the field. The topics explored during the event included artificial intelligence (AI), genomics, controlled environment agriculture (CEA), drones, robotics, sensors, energy, and food systems.
Participants took advantage of the opportunity to learn about the GIA's capabilities within the agritech and food sector while exploring the unique specialties and expertise of its members. They were also provided insights from social science colleagues, who emphasize the importance of integrating social context and food literacy into agritech initiatives.
Looking forward, the GIA is set to expand its reach with a broader audience by hosting a CEA & AI workshop in Spring 2025, alongside a series of seminars aimed at promoting ongoing dialogue and collaboration.
As SFU’s new, multi-faculty, global research institute, the GIA is dedicated to advancing agritech research and fostering collaboration with partners worldwide. The institute is headed by its founding director Woo Soo Kim, professor from the School of Mechatronic Systems Engineering and Special Advisor to the Vice President of Research and Innovation.
