School of Sustainable Energy Engineering
School of Sustainable Energy Engineering forms research partnership with Corix biomass plant at SFU
The School of Sustainable Energy Engineering is partnering with Corix, the company behind the Renewable Energy Centre biomass plant on Burnaby Mountain, for a four-year research collaboration to enhance sustainability and reduce emissions.
The project aims at measuring the quality of locally-sourced wood waste and the plant’s performance to improve operations and reduce emissions. This $360,000 initiative, funded through the Mitacs Accelerate program and Corix, combines industry expertise with academic research to develop more efficient technologies. Since connecting to the Renewable Energy Centre in 2020, SFU has significantly reduced its greenhouse gas emissions, with plans to reach a 50% reduction by 2025. The research aims to optimize biomass fuel quality, develop models for plant performance, and explore additional sustainability opportunities, including carbon capture and residual ash reuse. The project highlights SFU’s leadership in sustainable energy solutions and its commitment to combating climate change.
