Gloria Gutman received her B.A. in English and Psychology from the University of British Columbia in 1961. She then pursued graduate studies at the University of Alberta, receiving her M.A. in Psychology of Aging in 1964. She returned to UBC for her doctoral studies, and was awarded her Ph.D. in Developmental and Social Psychology. From 1964 to 1980, Gutman held several part-time positions at the University of Calgary, Mount Royal College and the University of British Columbia. From 1974 to 1980, she was a part-time assistant professor in UBC’s Psychology department. While affiliated with UBC, she was a research associate on the President’s Committee on Gerontology in the Division of Health Services Research and Development. In 1980 she joined Simon Fraser University as Co-ordinator of Gerontology programmes in Continuing Studies for two years.
