What is Three Minute Thesis?

3MT is an academic competition developed by The University of Queensland, Australia in 2008 for graduate students. Simon Fraser University held its first 3MT in 2013 and the event is now run annually.

The competition challenges graduate students to distill their research into a three minute presentation, with only one slide. The competition strives to provide students with exposure to their research, while also engaging in the discussions of other research.

The event is open to the general public and those in attendance will have the opportunity to vote for their favourite presenter for the “People’s Choice Award,” who will then receive $150.00.

The Master of Ceremonies for the 2015 FCAT heat will be Martin Gotfrit and a panel of three esteemed judges will join him. The winner of the competition will receive $400.00 and have the chance to compete in the university wide competition.

2014 3MT FCAT Winner Mark Nazemi:

"3MT provides a good opportunity for graduate students to learn how to succinctly communicate their research to a broader audience. It's also a great way to improve your public speaking and gives you the opportunity to share your work to the general public."
