Qinwen Yu

Qinwen is a master’s student in the Global Communication MA Double Degree program. Originally from Beijing, Qinwen moved to Vancouver to undertake this program. After finishing her initial academic year at SFU, she’ll return to Beijing for a second year at the Communication University of China.

Qinwen’s studies include a research project exploring how Canadian national newspapers portray China’s rising power. She was given the People’s Choice award for her presentation of this project at SFU’s Three Minute Thesis Competition.

Qinwen finds that her studies at SFU have broadened her thinking about future career options. Before starting her master’s, she did marketing with companies such as Burson-Marsteller and Orient Star Media. While she’s still interested in marketing, that interest has now expanded to include public service campaigns. Some communication professionals use their expertise to support social justice and public welfare, and Qinwen may decide to “change the world a little bit.”
