FCAT June 2021 Convocation: Looking back

June 28, 2021

We called on this year’s FCAT graduates to reflect on their experiences as university students and how it feels to be graduating online. They shared memories of their favourite moments on campus, and also gave advice to their fellow graduates. Here is some of what they had to say:

Xin Tong | PhD, Interactive Arts and Technology

“I’m very happy about graduating, I have to say it's a big day for me. And it's a recognition of what I've been doing for the past few years.

Vishakha Uppoor | Master of Publishing

“I’m going to miss just going down to classes in the morning, having these intense discussions about anything and everything. Being in a room full of people who are equally passionate about the same things as you are. And I guess most importantly, having this group of really supportive and amazing professors who encouraged you and cared about your ideas and invested in your work.”

Alexandra Kitson | PhD, Interactive Arts and Technology | Dean’s Convocation Medalist

“A memorable class was probably qualitative methods, and that's because I was able to do a project on lucid dreamers. And that completely changed my degree direction.”

Dalia Hatalova | BFA, Contemporary Arts | Dean's Convocation Medalist

“I think mostly SFU is known for having a lot of critical discourses, and that’s something that has been true in a lot of my classes where we can have varied perspectives and share ideas in a very comfortable environment.”

Beau Bridge | Post Baccalaureate Diploma, Contemporary Arts

“It feels quite amazing [to graduate online]. It feels like I've pushed a boulder up the mountain. And I guess graduating online kind of feels very appropriate and feels part of the times.”

Samad Raza | BA, Communication

“Don't stop. Just keep moving forward. Everybody makes mistakes, everybody has something to regret. But if you stay on it and dwell on it, then you won't be able to move forward. So keep moving forward, dream big, make new goals.”

Kayli Jamieson | BA, Communication

"If you have career ideals or dreams, it doesn't mean that they can't change down the line. You're not set to one career ideal and your whole life — it's okay to change. You change as a person and you're continually growing."
