fcat 5 year plan copy

FCAT works at the intersection of communication, art, and design as these continuously transform and are transformed by local and global interactions, digital technologies, creativity and innovation, and sociocultural change.

FCAT encompasses three schools — Communication, Contemporary Arts, and Interactive Arts & Technology— and two professional programs — Publishing and the Master in Digital Media.  Together, we aim to engage in a set of multidisciplinary projects responsive to society’s needs and interests in the creative economy yet providing space for reflective consideration of alternatives.

Our Five Year Plan responds to the opportunities created by the growth and change in the creative economy and mitigates the threats of increased competition and insufficient resources.  It builds on multidisciplinary educational and research programs that are distinctive, innovative, and socially relevant and addresses the need to better communicate our mission and increase cross-unit interactions.

Our plan is responsive to the SFU mission to become Canada’s leading engaged university:

To engage with our students, we plan to (1) expand our recruitment, (2) offer more undergraduate research opportunities, (3) extend undergraduate mentorship, (8) improve course access, and (15) establish an FCAT teaching initiative.

To build engaging research, we plan to (4) develop multidisciplinary research clusters and (14) enhance our national and international profile.

To engage with our communities, we plan to (5) expand our strategic partnerships, (6) develop education for working professionals, (10) increase coop participation, and (13) engage communities in our work.

To ensure sustainability, we plan to (7) develop leadership capacity, (11) plan for the future of Publishing, (9) manage technology renewal, and (12) launch and sustain new programs.

This Five Year Plan will be communicated to FCAT faculty, staff and student leaders and will become a critical component of annual FCAT Leadership Retreats starting in Spring 2013.  It will be the cornerstone for FCAT’s work with our advisory group and our community partners.
