Biography

As the FNHA’s Medical Director, Dr. Charl Badenhorst reviews the appropriateness and quality of primary health care provided to communities, and provides medical expertise to assist clinical care providers in communities with delivering high quality and culturally safe/competent health care services. He also works on health issues and health policy issues with community-level physicians, as well as with physician leadership, and will advocate for First Nations individuals and communities while providing medical oversight for FNHA primary care projects happening on-reserve. Dr. Badenhorst is also responsible for tracking the Northern Region until a Senior Medical Officer for this region is hired. Before joining the FNHA, Dr. Badenhorst served as Medical Health Officer for Northern Health as the Northeast Medical Officer. There, he was involved in several environmental health and public health-related projects and organizations. Other past positions include Senior Medical Health Officer for Cape Breton in Nova Scotia and family physician in Fort St. John in northeastern BC for many years. Dr. Badenhorst is interested in bringing communities, public health and health care providers closer in order to best promote sustainable population health and primary health care for all. In the past few years, he has also developed an interest in addiction medicine, particularly opioid addiction.
