Biography

Thomas L. Patterson, Ph.D., is Professor of Psychiatry at University of California, San Diego, and has been conducting psychosocial and behavioral research with HIV+ and at-risk populations since 1989. He has been the principal investigator on several NIH-funded grants to test the efficacy of theory-based behavioral interventions to increase condom use and decrease HIV and STI transmission in methamphetamine users (both HIV-positive MSM and HIV-negative male and female heterosexuals) in the U.S., female sex workers in Mexico and India, and male clients of female sex workers in Tijuana, Mexico. In 2015, Dr. Patterson completed a multi-site implementation study of his efficacious, single-session HIV prevention intervention for female sex workers at 13 community clinics spread across Mexico. His current projects include two fiveyear studies funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse. One will examine HIV transmission networks among MSM in Tijuana using both viral genetic and self-reported social network data, and the other will test the efficacy of a theory-based text-messaging program to sustain safer-sex behaviors in female sex workers in Tijuana and Ciudad Juarez.

Dr. Patterson has written or coauthored over 550 articles and book chapters, was a founding editor of AIDS and Behavior, and has served on a number of scientific review panels and advisory committees.
