Junior Big Data Analyst  RESEARCH ASSISTANT POSITION WITH SFU’S BIG DATA HUB

Do you want to work with a collaborative team in an innovative environment? Then join us at Simon Fraser University’s Big Data Hub as a part-time research assistant.  

The Consulting Service, as part of SFU’s Big Data Initiative, is dedicated to providing expert advice to its clients, both inside and outside the university. You will interact with diverse data users—from newbies to experts—to share your expertise and offer effective and creative advice and solutions. Our goal is to exceed client expectations and support their analytic needs.   

 

Your responsibilities could include:  

Support other consultants with client projects. Assist clients with data collection, design of studies, data clean up, analyses, reporting, reviewing results, among other related duties.  

Meet with clients both alone and under supervision on a regular basis to understand their needs; provide data cleaning, analysis, and reporting work; and provide status updates to the client for larger projects.  

Respond to client emails, requests and questions. Log updates, issues, and tasks in the project management system.  

Collaborate with other consultants to share your expertise to further client service in SFU’s Big Data Hub.  

Be an ambassador for SFU’s Big Data Initiative by sharing your expertise with the team and peers.  

 

Skills and Experience: 

Ability to write readable code and utilize Open Source libraries in the Python or R ecosystems § Extensive experience with machine learning and data management tools, e.g. Apache Spark, SQL 

Experience with modern version control software § Experience extracting and cleaning data from different sources for use by various systems 

Familiarity creating user interaction in browser-based visualization systems, such as R/Shiny or plotly/Dash would be an asset § Strong analysis and problem-solving skills 

Excellent communication (written and verbal) skills, including presentation skills § Excellent customer service skills 

Ability to communicate technical concepts to non-technical users § Qualitative and/or quantitative research experience would be an asset
