PERU: Nutrition, Health Promotion, Monitoring & Evaluation and/or Water & Sanitation In the High Andes, it is hard to grow crops, so the people eat guinea pig.

This organization has been ingenious in creating green houses to grow vegetables to increase the nutrition for the people.

They would like Nutritionists to augment their Nutrition program; and to Monitor & Evaluate the program.

They would also like Public Health students or professionals who can do health promotion/ prevention in rural villages, as well as Public Health people that can teach water & sanitation including how to purify water.

Spanish is essential; and if you can speak Quechua, a real plus.

This site is a great location for exploring Machu Picchu/ the Sacred Valley, Cuzco, Lake Titicaca and the Amazon.

Lately, we get people who are hesitant to volunteer in Africa, because they do not want to be "the Great White Savior".

Note: African directors have REQUESTED volunteers; it is not a matter of saving anyone; you work side by side as equals.

We do look for volunteers who do not have a paternalistic attitude, but once that is addressed, you are wanted in Africa!

Our opportunities in Asia are slim because language has proved to be a barrier in many countries.

EPIDEMIOLOGY & PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT - COMMUNICABLE DISEASE: Cameroon If you are interested in global health, this opportunity provides valuable experience.

85% of malaria deaths in Africa occur in children under five years of age. Every 30 seconds a child dies from malaria.

Work with Cameroonian director, a MPH, to assess and limit the spread of communicable diseases- malaria, TB, onchocerciasis (river blindness), schistosomiasis (bilharzia) and childhood diarrhea - by training the local population in prevention.

POPULATION & REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH/ FAMILY PLANNING: Ghana & Cameroon Due to the lack of family planning, more than half of the world's growth is expected to come from Africa by 2100.

One of our sites in Ghana and also in Cameroon have asked for help with family planning, contraception, sexual and reproductive health, including STD's and breast & cervical cancer.

The people of the community realize that they would not be so poor if they did not have 10 mouths to feed and 8 children's school fees to pay.

NUTRITION: Cameroon - different org

In the rural villages, people only have the food in their fields to feed themselves.

When their harvested food is all used up, they eat "bush meat."

Cameroon's most revered food is fermented cassava root, which is not very nutritious.

Come teach villagers what crops they could plant that would be higher in nutrition, e.g. moringa.

They grow peanuts. Teach them how to complement to make a complete protein.

Cameroon is a tropical country where tropical fruits grow without much coaxing, but the villagers do not take advantage of the fruits. Teach them the benefits.

FISTULA PREVENTION: Uganda

A fistula is formed when a baby gets stuck in labor and contractions push the uterus into rectum or bladder and make tear.

Fistulas usually result in lifelong incontinence or leaking feces and societal rejection.

Fistulas are difficult to repair so best intervention is prevention.

In Nov 2019 a MHP will teach about delaying childbirth as most fistulas happen to 13, 14 or 15 year old mothers.

The community is organizing ways endangered moms can get a C section when baby is stuck.

But this will be long "sensitization" campaign to persuade men to have wives use birth control until their bodies are ready for childbirth. Willing to help with this attitude shift? We especially welcome men and fathers.

NUTRITION: Ecuador

Work with the indigenous Andean communities to organize a demonstration garden .

and to identify the nutritional needs of its community members.

Experience with  nutrition, agriculture and project management needed. Spanish fluency is a must.

MATERNAL & CHILD HEALTH: Cameroon clinic Maternity clinic would like public health students to help with ante natal and post natal care.

They would like to know why more high risk moms (e.g. with AIDS) do not come for ante natal care.

NUTRITION: Jordan - Syrian, Iraqi & Palestinian Refugees Busy clinic that serves Syrian, Iraqi & Palestinian refugees welcomes a nutritionist.

The Nutritionist must speak fluent Arabic so that they can do awareness sessions about diet and Nutrition, e.g. about diabetes and hypertension, and provide one-to-one consultations with refugees in Arabic.

You work side-by-side with Jordanian staff to assist their work.

KENYA: Kibera slum

Approximately 1 billion people on this earth live in slums. Often, they come to the city looking for work, and find none.

They ask for help in public health: promote good nutrition, especially with newborns to decrease infant mortality; or counsel people that are HIV+; or teach ways to prevent malaria. They install tanks for clean water. Come help!

INDIA: Clean water

Like Nepal, India has high food and water borne disease due to poor sanitation, read fecal water.

Our grassroots Gandhian school and community has launched program to test water and promote water conservation.

This is a great place to learn some of the basics about water purification and promote the importance of clean water.

NEPAL: Water & Sanitation; basic Public Health Nepal, in many places, has poor sanitation so high water borne disease: diarrhea, dysentery, typhoid, gastroenteritis, e coli, hepatitis A and cholera. An estimated 44,000 children die every year in Nepal from waterborne diseases.

Come teach children in our primary school about hygiene and sanitation; and if you have the skills, teach their families about the variety of ways to purify water.

WATER & SANITATION: Northern Uganda - challenging

1 million Sudanese have flooded into northern Uganda, the 2nd biggest refugee crisis in the world.

This Ugandan organization would like help teach good sanitation & hygiene and how to purify water.

This is more challenging because it is more remote & fledgling organization.

ALCOHOL & DRUG ABUSE - ASSESSMENT & PROGRAM DESIGN: Uganda This same organization in northern Uganda would like help assessing their community's alcohol/ drug problem and designing prevention and intervention programs that are sustainable on a very low or no budget.

Students, graduates and professionals in Public Health are all needed.

Both Bachelor's and Master's level accepted unless otherwise noted above.

WHEN TO APPLY

*People are already beginning to apply to volunteer in June, July & August.

We send this first announcement in Oct or Nov for those that like to get a leap on their summer plans.

We will send a 2nd, sometimes slightly revised, announcement in Jan or Feb.

It is smart to finish application process by March so you have time to prepare to go to another country.

Our volunteer programs do not just run in June, July & August - that is simply when the most people can go.

Except primary & secondary schools that have school schedules to adhere to, most of our programs run year round.
