Job Opportunity - Research Assistant, Indigenous Mentorship Network of the Pacific Northwest

Job Title:    Research Assistant, Simon Fraser University Project:    SFU-Skookum Lab: Urban Health Research Project Full/Part Time: 10 hours/week 

 

Job Summary:  In collaboration with the Skookum Health Research Team, the research assistant will help establish research partnerships and relationships with communities and organizations in Surrey, BC. The student will work with the research team over 3 months (September-November 2020) to explore what the health needs and priorities are for Indigenous peoples in Surrey (defined broadly and inclusively as First Nations, Métis and Inuit). The team – led by Dr. Lyana Patrick in the Faculty of Health Sciences – will provide research mentorship for an Indigenous student over the course of three months, starting as soon as possible.

The chart below provides an overview of work that is expected to be carried out by the Research Assistant with support and guidance of the research team.

Assist with research ethics board application   

Assist with organizing listening circles with guide groups (elders/youth/community support workers/caregivers) and 1-1 interviews with health care professionals;

Help with developing research guide, data collection and preliminary analysis   

Help with planning for virtual community engagement sessions and wellness day event (liaising with community partners and research team, developing activities and planning for virtual delivery of meals if in-person feast is not possible due to COVID-19 restrictions)   

Transcription and data cleaning   

Personnel Specifications: 

Education and Experience:

Applicant must be an Indigenous graduate student; good verbal and written communication skills; experience working with Indigenous communities is an asset. 

Compensation: A $2,000 stipend will be provided through the Indigenous Mentorship Network of the Pacific Northwest.
