HSCI 345 Students engage in art to explore adolescent health
FHS offers 14 undergraduate courses during the Summer 2013 semester. Among them is HSCI 345, entitled “Health of Tweens to Twenties” which investigates some of the health issues facing the tweens to twenties, in Canada and in other international contexts.
Taught by FHS Senior Lecturer Dr. Rochelle Tucker, the course examines the health status of adolescents and young adults using a range of indicators and engages students to consider how gender, ethnicity, socio-economic position, sexual identity, immigrant status and disability influence adolescent health. Students explore theoretical approaches used in adolescent health research and discuss programs and policies that could promote health and prevent morbidity and mortality in these age groups and throughout the lifecourse.
This week, the class covered eating disorders, body image and body art, with a segment of lecture devoted to what we know about successful eating disorders prevention activities and a segment of lab devoted to helping the students engage in cognitive dissonance activities. The class took the opportunity to take the lesson outdoors and made Blusson Hall’s courtyard a lot more colourful.
