Biography
Rodney Hunt is a sociologist with a specialization in the areas of human sexualities and health inequities. He is currently a PhD candidate in the Department of Sociology at SFU. Before coming to SFU, Rodney completed his BA and MA in sociology at the University of Victoria.
Teaching Interests
Rodney’s teaching interests include: the social determinants of health, theorizing health inequities, the social and behavioral contexts of health and disease, human sexuality, gender, the body in medicine, and critical research methodologies. He is particularly interested in encouraging students to examine some of assumptions about the body and sexualities in science and medicine in order to facilitate insight into how contemporary biomedicine shapes, and is shaped, by the ideals of sex, gender, and sexuality.
Research Interests
For his doctoral research, Rodney is exploring conceptualizations of sex and gender influencing parent and clinician decisions about the medical management of intersex children. The aim of his research is to further understandings about the interrelation of sex and gender, and to produce useful and relevant data for the development of pedagogical resources that address evolving professional ideas about sex and gender, with the specific goal of improving the quality and continuity of care for intersex children and their families. Rodney’s research has been supported by a number of scholarships and awards, including a C.D. Nelson Memorial Graduate Entrance Scholarship at SFU (2006), a Doctoral Fellowship from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (2007-2010) and a Research Trainee Senior Graduate Studentship from the Michael Smith Foundation for Health Research (2007-2008).
