Each year the Department of French, in in collaboration with SFU International, offers a Field School in Tours, France for eight weeks in the early summer. Between 12-20 students are accepted. They are accompanied by a faculty member from the Department of French, who teaches one of the three courses taken by participating students. These courses are at the third year level and cover language, literature, civilization and culture. Two courses are taught by faculty members from the Université de Tours. It is recommended that students have completed French courses at SFU up to the level of FREN 222 (or equivalent) and one of FREN 230-3 or FREN 240-3. Applicants should have completed 45 semester hours (including the recommended courses, their equivalents, or have obtained permission from the Department of French) and be in good academic standing. The basic cost of the program (not including airfare), which is subject to exchange rates, is normally in the range of $5600-6000 CDN*.  Bursaries are available to assist with costs.

Applications are available at SFU International in the Maggie Benston Centre.   The deadline for application is normally the last week of January.

Tours, situated on the Loire River, just one hour from Paris by TGV (express train), is a beautiful, pedestrian-friendly city of 250,000 inhabitants. It has several museums, a basilica and churches of interest, as well as a charming medieval square, Place Plumereau, in the heart of the old city. Cultural activities abound. A centre for Renaissance Studies, Tours is an ideal base from which to discover outstanding examples of Renaissance architecture and gardens at nearby châteaux, such as Chambord and Chenonceaux. There are also vineyards in the area meriting visits, particularly those surrounding the village of Vouvray.

*differential student fees are charged to international students. Qualified students from institutions other than SFU are eligible to participate but must first gain acceptance into SFU as Visiting Students (please contact SFU International for more information)
