Sessional Instructor Positions

Sessional positions are generally posted in October for Spring semester, February for Summer semester, and June for Fall semester.

All Sessional Instructor positions involve membership in the Teaching Support Staff Union (TSSU); and are subject to both sufficient enrollment in the course, and budgetary authorization.  The Department of French follows Article XIV (E) of the TSSU-SFU Collective Agreement when hiring Sessional Instructors.

Teaching Assistant/Tutor Marker Positions

TA/TM positions will be posted on the Monday, or next working day, of the tenth week prior to the commencement of the semester (Article XVI.2.a).

All Teaching Assistant/Tutor Marker positions involve membership in the Teaching Support Staff Union (TSSU); and are subject to both sufficient enrollment in the course, and budgetary authorization.  The Department of French follows Article XIII (F) of the TSSU-SFU Collective Agreement when hiring Teaching Assistants/Tutor Markers.

Qualifications:  Applicants must possess an appropriate level of proficiency in oral and written French (or Italian for ITAL courses) and English, including an in-depth knowledge of French (or Italian for ITAL courses) grammar and sound patterns and appropriate pedagogical skills to teach French (or Italian for ITAL courses), commensurate with the course level.  Applicants must demonstrate sufficient knowledge in the discipline of the course to interpret the course material.

INTERVIEW PROCESS FOR NEW APPLICANTS: Selected applicants will be observed and evaluated by one or more faculty members while doing 30 minutes of micro-teaching and will be notified of the results in writing.

DEPARTMENT OF FRENCH TA/TM APPOINTMENT PRIORITIES

(French Courses)

Priority for appointment/reappointment as a Teaching Assistant in the Department of French is in accordance with Article XIII of the Collective Agreement with the Teaching Support Staff Union.

Priority for appointment/reappointment as a Tutor-Marker in the Department of French is in accordance with Article XV of the Collective Agreement with the Teaching Support Staff Union.

In addition to the above-noted priority provisions, qualified applicants must possess a high level of proficiency in oral and written French and English, including an in-depth knowledge of French grammar and French sound patterns and appropriate pedagogical skills to teach French, both oral and written. 

In assigning qualified Teaching Assistants/Tutor-Markers to positions, the Department will also take into account the following:

  • Overall qualifications for specific courses at each level;
  • Instructor requests;
  • Applicant’s availability and course preferences;
  • Students who have received a TAship as part of a funding package;
  • Amount of financial support offered on admission to the graduate program;
  • Employment evaluations.

If an assignment within a priority group requires a selection between applicants, the graduate student without financial support from merit based scholarships or merit based fellowships during the semester of appointment with a value equal to at least a 5.17 appointment, will have priority for the appointment.

(Italian Courses)

Priority for appointment/reappointment as a Teaching Assistant in the Department of French is in accordance with Article XIII of the Collective Agreement with the Teaching Support Staff Union.
