Teaching and Research Assistantships

Research assistantships may be available through faculty research grants.  Much of the financial support for graduate students at the Master's level is in the form of one-semester Teaching Assistantships.  Teaching Assistants are employed in first-year French language courses (and, occasionally, in more advanced courses), where they are responsible for language tutorials and related pedagogical activities.  A full load of five base units (210 hours of teaching and related duties per semester) corresponds to a stipend of approximately $4,900 per  semester for a Master's student.  A typical combination of teaching and related duties would be 6 contact hours per week plus 10 hours of preparation per week.  Teaching Assistants are represented by the TSSU (Teaching Support Staff Union) and work under a collective agreement.  Candidates for a Teaching Assistantship are required to participate in an observation of language classes, followed by a demonstration class, before an appointment can be made.  For this reason, it is not normally possible to offer a Teaching Assistantship for the first semester of study at SFU.  These assistantships are NOT automatic and depend upon budget and course enrollments.

Entrance Scholarship Competition

SFU has a very limited number of major entrance scholarships for exceptional students, valued at $18,000 for a one-year period.  If you wish to be nominated for an entrance scholarship, you are strongly encouraged to submit your application for admission to your department of intended enrollment by January 15, 2010.  Failure to submit your application for admission by this deadline will decrease your chances for consideration in the annual Entrance Scholarship Competition to be held in Feburary, 2010.
