Zero Waste

Through introducing new Recycling Stations across campus, A map of the Recycling station can be found here.

Organics

Organic materials can be diverted from the landfill and composted to generate nutrient-rich material that can be used in landscaping and gardening. 
All raw and cooked food waste (including meat and bones), soiled napkins and food wrappers (except from Tim Horton’s) and bio-plastics cab be accepted.

Refundables

pop cans/ water bottles/ any containers with a refundable label

Please rinse and empty containers before placing them into recycling containers. 
 

Recyclables

Mixed Paper
(Faculty & Staff Offices)

white paper/ newspaper/ envelopes/ file folders/ paper bags/ phonebooks/ hard & soft cover books/ magazines/ shredded paper

Please ensure that paper is clean and dry and remove other packaging before recycling.

You can find recycling containers for paper in each faculty and staff office.

 

Mixed Paper (Common Area)

white paper/ newspaper/ envelopes/ file folders/ paper bags/ phonebooks/ hard & soft cover books/ magazines/ shredded paper

Please ensure that paper is clean and dry and remove other packaging before recycling.

You can find these containers in common areas (i.e. one of the "Trio" containers) or
in the loading bay of each building (Click here for location).

Mixed Container

cans/ bottles/ plastic containers (#1-7)/ glass (all colours)/ plastic bags

Please check recycling symbols on the bottom of plastic container and rinse & empty them before recycling.

Food Grease

Any kind of cooking oil and used oil. 

The container must be in good condition and not leaking.

Other Recyclables

  • batteries/ light bulbs or tubes/ propane gas containers/ cardboard/ boxes of shredded confidential material/ concrete / electronics (CDs, cell phones, toner cartridges, personal computers, televisions, films)/ metals / surplus (office furniture)/ styrofoam/ wood pallets

note:

  • any sharp edged recycling item has to be sealed and labeled on top
  • toner cartridges have to be contained or sealed in a plastic bag
  • cardboard boxes should be collapsed and neatly stacked

Most items are collected at the central stores in Facilities Services building. Please check with your main office for recycling and fill out a maintenance request for pickup.

Hazardous Waste

Science Stores collects chemicals, solvents, sharps and bio-hazardous waste. Please submit an online disposal form for recycling.

Items that we don't recycle

Waxed paper, milk cartons, drink boxes, pizza boxes, and containers contaminated with food are not recycled.
