3.2 Boolean Multi-criteria evaluation

i. Data preparation: In order to conduct a Boolean Multi-criteria evaluation (MCE) it is necessary to prepare the views to be analyzed to fit the 0 or 1 format.  This was done to both the grazing and agri views where they were reclassed so that areas with high or very high deterioration were given a value of 1 and all else a value of 0.  That operation prepared two of the views for the Boolean analysis (agri2b and grazing2c).

Next, severity of deterioration layer and rate of deterioration were assigned boolean values and overlayed to create a view that shows areas of high and very high deterioration at the most rapid rates of decay.

Method:

The layer popdens was also assigned into a Boolean image where locations that had 50 to 500 people per square kilometer were given a value of 1 and all other locations a value of 0.  The output image was popdens2b.

Method:

ii. Multi-criteria evaluation: Now that all of the layers are in Boolean format, the MCE can be run.  Because the purpose of the analysis is to locate an information and support centre, the names of the countries and nearby cities to the possible sites are important.  For this reason they have been digitized into the final MCE view.
