Introduction

Poor access to maternal healthcare is still a major issue for the country of Zimbabwe.

Distance, as a factor, is a major contributing factor in the cause of maternal mortality for women in Africa. Poor infrastructure, and the lack of healthcare facilities both further compound this issue for rural families as they are not able to afford proper transportation to such facilities.

This project will be taking a look at how we as GIScientists can tackle this issue and how we can help when it comes to future planning for the country of Zimbabwe.

Project Objectives

Our main objective for this project is to utilize GIS analytical tools as a method of identifying regions within Zimbabwe that lack access to healthcare facilities. Our study area is located just south of Harare, the capital of Zimbabwe. In this region we found that healthcare facilities were generally located within urban centers where maternal women living within the rural outskirts would have difficulty accessing.
