- Amercian explorer Robert E.Peary's expedition was the first successful group to reach the north pole by land, in 1909. They left originally from Canadian soil, on Ellesmere Island.
- Peary's exploration partner, Mathew A. Henson, was at the time a forgotten part of this expedition dispite his equal role with Peary, as due to elements of racism and his Afro-American background. He has since been aknowledged by the U.S. governement for his accomplishment.
- Peary and Henson's used many Inuit travel and survival methods, which ended up being an important element of their expedition success.
