Province of Prey Veng

The desperately impoverished southFigure 25eastern provinces of Prey Veng and Svay Rieng are little visited by Khmers from other parts of the country, let alone foreign tourists, other than passing through to make the journey to the border. People here live out an existence which is often below subsistence level. In other words, their rice crops are frequently washed away when the Mekong floods in the rainy season, following which, the ground bakes as hard as stone during the dry season. For those tourists needing overnight accommodation en route to the border or wherever else, the pleasant provincial town of Svay Rieng has both guesthouses and restaurants.
