The Summer Palace

Located in the northwest of Beijing, the Summer Palace is worth a visit while in Beijing. The largest imperial garden in the world, it was built as a gift to Emperor Qinglong's mother in 1750.

The palace was nearly destroyed in1860 by foreign troops, but was renovated in 1888 by Empress Cixi. Since this time it has been kept as a national treasure, the gardens were designed to incorporate aspects of the most beautiful palaces in China to ensure they were some of the most beautiful.
