For hundreds of years, diamonds have been valued as the most prescious of gems. Diamonds have an extremmely versatile utility -at one end of the spectrum, they have sentimental meaning; at the other, they are indispensable components in a multitude of technological instruments and products.

While their use may be widespread, the distribution of diamonds is not. The historical trajectory characterizing the diamond industry in Africa is one rife with elements of racism, political oppression, and economic inequalities.
Diamonds must be acknowledged when we examine Africa's colonial past, latter 20th Century bloodshed, economic oppression, and current efforts to take control of its natural resource base.
