Methodological and Operational Problems

The very first problem that I had was finding IDRISI information for the project to begin with.  I did various web searches and came up empty handed.  There was not a lot of information on the web about this program and if there was it was usually projects that other people had done.  Thank goodness Nadine gave us some information to work with because I would not have a project to hand in.  I have never digitized or tried converting various programs over to make it compatible for other programs to work with.  I felt if I was to try this for the project, I may not have anything to hand in and this would not be a good mark for a term project.  Therefore, I felt that if I was to rely on information that I did not have a good idea how to manipulate, then this could problems in the end result.  This is why I used the SIS DATA that was in IDRISI format from the 355 van_core data folder.

With the use of this van_core data, I tried to do fuzzy maps, but these were not turning out right.  I got an error message on a blank screen which meant nothing to me.  My project was going to be based on an MCE fuzzy maps pertaining to the best fish habitat, but this did not work out that way.  So, once again I had to change a various aspect of my project because it would not work and no one could figure out what was going on.  I went back to the boolean idea with using the yes or no answers.  I would prefer to have done fuzzy maps because they are more interesting than boolean, but this was not possible.  I could have done the fuzzy maps, but I may not have had much to hand in.

I also had some trouble with getting my cartographic model on the web.  Not sure why, but it turns out that you can not read it very well.  I changed the fonts three times and you still can't read it very well.

I found that using a boolean map is very restricted because it does not include some areas of the map.  It ignores basic ideas of the land because it is not recognized very well.  Therefore, more research on the area could have been done and I could have used something that was less broad.

My project could have been improved by looking more into the data sets on Vancouver Island and working with this information.  I had a hard time understanding the data sets so I just used the basic fields that I understood to base by buffers on.  Also, I could have probably developed a better question to ask, but I do think my question is relative to Vancouver Island.

I should have spent more time collecting data, but I did wait till only a few weeks before this was do.  I didn't realize how hard it would be to find information.

The steps I used for this project could have been more in-depth and other information may have got me to a closer answer than I reach.  The results were not as I expected, but nothing is as it seems until it has been completed in the real world.  The computer and I both could be wrong about the where the best place for a fish habitat should be.

Overall, this was a great experience to have and I think I will look further into the idea of web design.  I could have put more effort into this, but yes I have waited till the last minute as usual.
