5.0 Data Collection

5.1 City of Burnaby Mapping Staff
- Contacted Burnaby Mapping Staff to obtain the data.  Requested GIS Mapping technician to undergo some preprocessing of the data sets so that analysis would proceed with less difficulty.  I asked him to include specific fields in some attribute tables such as the length of the street in meters for each of the streets in the street-centre line network.  After some preprocessing was completed, the data was copied to a compact disc.  Along with obtaining digital data, I also obtained two paper maps.  One which details the location of the six Firehalls in Burnaby.  The other map is a City map of Burnaby.  It details transportation routes, community sites, and important landmarks.

5.2 Fire Department Chief and Associates
- Contacted the Fire Chief and associates of Firehall #5 as well as staff at thier administration office at Firehall #1.  Having conversed with the staff at Firehall #5, I became aware of the urgency for its relocation and there are plans to start construction as early as February of next year.  I met up with administrative personel as well, and they recommended the Fire Department annual report for 1998 to assist me in my project.

5.3 Burnaby School District
- Contacted the Burnaby School District by telephone to collect population data.  The student population was obtained for major elementary and secondary schools.  Important to note is that the data was collected in September 30, 1999 so it is fairly recent.
