6.0 Spatial Analysis

6.1 Preprocessing Required

6.11 Add Seconds field to Street centre-line theme
- Added a field to the Street centre-line theme called Seconds that reveals on average, how long it takes for a Fire truck to travel along it.  The average speed of the Fire truck would travel approximately 75 km/hr, as notified by the Fire Chief of Firehall #5.  The speed is a rough estimate at best and takes into some consideration, the time of day, the amount of stop signs, and the type of road.

6.12 Add Alternative Proposal location for Firehall #5 to Places theme
- Placed an additional point to places theme to represent the alternative proposal for Firehall #5.  The location was based on analysis done before hand and took into consideration details from the City map of Burnaby as well as the Firehall map.  I was aware to place it near schools with high density student population as well as at busy streets and commercial areas.

6.2 Calculate Service Area and Service Network

6.21 Existing Firehall #5
- Used Arcview Network Analyist.  I preselected FireHall #5 then chose Find Service Area from the Network menu.  Selected Travel-to-Site then I loaded the Place theme that has FireHall#5 already selected.  Finally, I selected Seconds for the Cost Field and Solve to generate the service area and service network.

6.22 Proposed Firehall #5
- Used Arcview Network Analyist.  In applying the same procedures as in calculating the service area for the existing Firehall, this is the resulting service area and service network.

Calculate Interpolate Grid from Student Population
- Used Spatial Analyist.  Before starting the analysis procedures, I created a field in the places theme that contained the population for each school.  I named it Z-value.  I then chose Interpolate Grid from the Surface menu.  In the OutputGidExtent section of the OutputGridSpecification section, I chose Same-as-View.  I then chose IDW as the method and chose Z-value for the Z-Value field both from Interpolate Surface.  The following reveals the last menu before interpolation was applied and the Interpolated Surface.

- Used Arcview Network Analyist.  In applying the same procedures as in calculating the service area for the existing and the propsed Firehall, this is the resulting service area and service network.

6.3 Calculate Shortest Route

6.31 Existing Firehall to Alpha Secondary & Burnaby North Secondary
- Used Arcview Network Analyist.  I preselected Firehall #5 and Alpha Secondary then I highlighted the Street-Centre line theme.  Finally, I chose Find Best Route from the Network menu.  Selected Load Stops then I loaded the Place theme that has Firehall #5 and Alpha Secondary selected.  Then I selected Seconds for the Cost Field and Solve to generate the route.  The same procedures were applied to locate the shortest route to Burnaby North Secondary.

6.32 Proposed Firehall to Alpha Secondary & Burnaby North Secondary
- Used Arcview Network Analyist.  In applying the same procedures as in calculating the shortest route for the existing Firehall, this is the resulting shortest route.

6.33 Alternative Proposal Firehall to Alpha Secondary & Burnaby North Secondary
- Used Arcview Network Analyist.  In applying the same procedures as in calculating the shortest route for the existing Firehall, this is the resulting shortest route.
