Conclusion

In conclusion, this project has demonstrated that GIS can be effectively used as a tool to determine if gentrification is occurring. More importantly, this project has shown that GIS can be used to assess gentrification at different scales, thereby reducing ecological fallacy, which occurs at smaller scale analysis.

While our results showed that gentrification was not occurring in the DTES as a whole, when analyzing gentrification at the level of the sub-areas, gentrification could be detected in particular areas of the DTES.

The ability to detect gentrification at a large scale has the potential to allow communities to mitigate the effects of gentrification before the social composition of communities is significantly altered.
